Help with NightEar
Pairing, Wi-Fi, battery, alerts and the live picture, in plain words.
Pairing
How do I pair two phones?
- Open NightEar on both phones, at home on the same Wi-Fi.
- On the phone that stays in the nursery, pick This is the baby phone. It shows a QR code.
- On the other phone, pick This is the parent phone and scan the code.
Both phones then show each other's name. The next evening you open NightEar on both phones and they find each other within a few seconds.
The QR code won't scan.
Type the code shown under the QR code instead, on the parent phone under Or type the code. A code works once and for ten minutes, and only while the pairing screen is open. Expired? Open the pairing screen again for a new code.
Can I pair a third phone?
Yes. Up to four phones can listen to one baby phone. On the baby phone, go to Settings and pick Pair another phone. Two parents can watch at the same time.
How do I unpair a phone?
Settings on the baby phone lists the paired parent phones. Unpair one, or pick Unpair all. That phone's key is then gone and it can't get in anymore.
Wi-Fi and connection
Not found. What now?
Both phones need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Check in the Wi-Fi settings of both that the network name is the same. Often one phone is on 4G or 5G because the Wi-Fi is weak there.
On iPhone and iPad, NightEar needs to be allowed on the local network: Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network, NightEar on.
Guest network, mesh or a second router
A guest network often doesn't let devices talk to each other. Pick your normal Wi-Fi on both phones. If you have two networks at home, for example from a second router or an extender with its own name, put both phones on the same network. A mesh system with one name usually works fine.
I use a VPN.
Switch the VPN off on both phones for now. A VPN sends traffic out of the house, and then the phones can't find each other on your own Wi-Fi.
What happens if the connection drops?
The baby phone sends sound all the time, also when it's quiet. After 3 seconds without a signal it says Silence on the line and your screen turns orange. After 10 seconds the Connection lost alarm sounds, also with your screen locked. Both phones then try again by themselves. When the baby phone is back, it carries on by itself.
Does it work away from home?
No. NightEar only works at home, on the same Wi-Fi. That way the sound never goes over the internet.
Battery and charger
Does the baby phone need a charger?
Yes, put it on the charger for a whole night. The parent phone always shows how full the baby phone's battery is, and gives an alert if the charger comes loose or the battery runs low. Keep the cable out of your child's reach.
The baby phone gets warm.
Put it on a hard, open surface, not under a blanket or between pillows. Leave it on the black night screen. If it gets too warm, you get an alert on the parent phone, and the live picture stops until it has cooled down.
Will the parent phone last the night?
The parent phone plays the room's sound all night and uses some battery for that. Put it on a charger at night too if you can.
Android: the app stops at night.
Some phones stop apps at night to save battery. Check this once on both phones; NightEar helps you with the Phone check.
- Usually: open the app settings, then Battery, and pick Unrestricted.
- Samsung: Unrestricted as well, and don't put the app under Sleeping apps (Battery, Background usage limits).
- Xiaomi: pick Battery saver: No restrictions, and switch Autostart on.
- Huawei: open App launch, pick Manage manually for the app and leave all three switches on.
- OPPO: open the app settings, then Battery usage, and allow background activity.
- vivo: allow high background power use for the app (Battery, Background power consumption).
If the phone stops the app anyway, the Connection lost alarm on the parent phone warns you.
Sound and alerts
The phones can hear each other.
When the two phones are close together, the baby phone hears the parent phone's sound and it goes round. NightEar notices and turns the room sound off on the parent phone. You then see The phones can hear each other. Alerts still work.
Take the parent phone to another room and tap Sound back on.
I get too many or too few alerts.
On the parent phone, set the Sensitivity in Settings, with the room's live sound and the line next to it: above the line you get an alert. Under How long you choose whether a sound must last 1, 3 or 5 seconds. The baby phone learns a fan or a heater by itself.
Will I hear the alarm with my phone on silent?
Test it before you go to sleep: Settings, Test the alarm. Allow notifications for NightEar, and on iPhone also Time Sensitive notifications, so an alert gets through a Focus. Don't set your phone's volume too low.
Baby phone microphone is off.
A phone call, Siri or a closed iPad cover can take over the microphone. So put the baby phone in flight mode with Wi-Fi on, and switch on Do Not Disturb, so Wi-Fi calling doesn't ring either. Then tap the baby phone to carry on listening.
Watch (live picture)
I don't see a picture.
The live picture only works while NightEar is open on the baby phone. A phone switches the camera off as soon as an app goes to the background or the screen locks. So leave the baby phone on the black night screen, on the charger.
Does it say Watching is off on the baby phone? Switch it on in Settings on the baby phone, and allow the camera.
The picture stops after a few minutes.
After 3 minutes the picture pauses, so the baby phone saves battery and doesn't get warm. Tap Keep watching. Two parents can watch at the same time; a third has to wait.
The room is dark.
A phone camera has no night light. Switch on Night view on the parent phone: it makes a dark picture lighter. In a very dark room the picture stays dark; sound and alerts always work.
Radiation and a safe spot
What about radiation?
A phone on Wi-Fi transmits, so no radiation at all doesn't exist. What you can do: place the baby phone at least 1 metre from the cot, as the Belgian government advises for baby monitors. Put it in flight mode with Wi-Fi on: the mobile network is then off and it only uses your own Wi-Fi.
Where do I put the baby phone?
In a fixed spot, at least 1 metre from the cot, with the cable out of reach. Never in or on the cot and never under a blanket. Point the camera at the cot if you want to watch.
Is NightEar a medical device?
No. NightEar lets you hear and see what happens in the nursery. It measures nothing about your baby and does not replace adult supervision.
